Ears that dont stand up
« on: March 26, 2009, 10:10:05 PM »
Hi all

My Baileys ears have not come up much  (he's now 9 months)

I don't mind but did contact the breeder, they said some GSD ears don't come up till 1 years old.
Is this true ? I didn't think it took that long.

I was told by the vet that I could tape them but like I said it didn't worry me too much, I was just interested to know.

Im not sure what the chances are of them standing up after a year, but I do know a shepherd whose ears dont stand up at 3 years old (and I dont think they ever will).

It just adds to the personality. :)

Yes Sam I agree it does add to the personality.

I find most poeple don't think twice about touching him, his colour and ears do not look as you would expect a GSD to look.
When they ask what breed he is, they have a  mixture of fear and surprise when I say GSD.
When I had my black and tan most people wouldn't even make eye contact despite the fact he was a very gentle dog.

Izzy took 10 months for her ears to stand straight properly. Apparently, the more things they can chew on the better, Chewing strengthens the muscles in the cheek and the base of the ears. The chewy 'marrow or hide' sticks you can get from pet shops are great. Another reason they might not be standing is infection or allergy.

Izzy has a really sensitive stomach and if she eats the wrong thing, it shows in her ears, they flop until I give them a good clean. If it's a smelly brown colour, it tends to be a build up of yeast that then causes an infection, or they might just want a deep clean, in which case massaging his/her ears at the base will loosen it all up. Don't go sticking your fingers right down the ears though, better to see a vet and get some drops

Good luck

My mom has a GSD named Hunny, and her ears weren't standing up yet when she was about 6 months, so she had her ears taped by the vet.

Now her ears are standing up on their own. If she'd been my dog though, I don't think I'd care either way & probably would just leave them as is.

I agree, it does ad to their persoality!! LOL ;D

hmm that is very nice topic, The German Shepherd Dog, also known as an Alsatian or just the German Shepherd, is a breed of large-sized dog that originated in Germany.

No need to worry about it, when your dog will grow up that problem will resolved automatically.
